Drapery Progress

Hi Friends! Phew, committing to doing two blog posts before I leave has proven challenging. I don't really have a "how-to" for you, yet, but I do have a work in progress. A kind of halfway-on-the-guestroom window treatments.

Ya'll know, I've been totally crushing on the Kas bird fabric.  We'll here it is!  I purchased 2 1/4 yds. last week to use between the pillow shams and window treatments.  I really wanted to do the entire panel in bird fabric, but even at half price, it still would have taken 5 yds./$20 yd. for $100.  Now, I don't think $100 is horrible, if you love the fabric and it will be in a main area, but since this is a spare room, I didn't think it warranted the cost.  Plus, I would have had to purchase lining and make them from scratch.

I decided to look for plain panels and add the bird fabric to the bottom.  Enter these panels that I found, lined, at Tuesday Morning, $25 for the pair.  Unfortunately, they are a bit too short.

The panel, hung on hidden tabs in the background, is about 4" too short.  The foreground panel was attached to the rod with rings which gave me 3" extra inches--now to get a spare inch somewhere.

While I had intended on adding fabric to the bottom, it wouldn't be seen because the bed's in the way.  The other solution was adding it to the top.  Okay, can do.   After cutting the fabric for the shams, I had 40" left to spare.  Boy, did I cut that close (no pun intended!).  Each panel got a 20" (less seams) bird fabric header.  (Sorry, I used the blinky flash.  I could not get the photo to remotely turn out at this time of day.)  Fringe was also added to give them a "little something extra."  Fortunately, it was 1/2 off the day I was shopping.  I'll give you more of the specifics next week and, hopefully, more of the room!

I'll be traveling to Michigan tomorrow with my mom for a memorial service for my aunt.  We will be visiting Frankenmuth on Friday.  Follow me on Twitter and I'll post some photos for you (you can click on the word "Twitter" above, or on my social icons at the top of the page--for some reason it isn't highlighted).  You won't want to miss Bronner's!

  2. They look really pretty, Kim! I need to do this same thing in our sunroom. I already have the fabric to add to the top and the trim. I need 8 panels though so I'm not looking to spend a lot. I'm hoping for a clearance sale. I'm not sure if there is a Tuesday Morning here {I did have one on Long Island}. I'd love to see you how attached the fabric to the panel; I don't know if the way I'm thinking of doing it is right. Enjoy your trip!

  6. Wow! You really work so hard on making curtains!! I'd just go out and buy them! The ones you made are really pretty but I bet you could have found some and not had to do all that work but I know you ENJOY the sewing and whole process..which baffles me b/c when all is said & done, nobody really knows all the work you put into them. That's just sad...cos if I did that much work-I'd pin a big note in the middle of them saying "Hey....I MADE THESE AND IT WAS A LOT OF WORK"~!! LOL They are lovely, though!! Smart move putting the print on top or they'd never have been worth all the trouble if you couldn't see them!!

Also, your recipes for both kinds of cupcakes is sooooo yummy-I could have sat down and eaten all of them myself!! Very irresistable!! Loved them and will be making them more often so do you do alterations?? I'll soon be neededing larger jeans/slacks/dresses if I can't stop baking these great cupcakes!! No kidding, either!! I'm serious!!

    You need a break, now!!
