Fabric Fun Thursday No. 25

Hi girls, do you have all of your Christmas projects and decorating done?  Ha ha - good one, right?  Let's see you strut your fabric stuff today.  How about a great stocking or tree skirt display?  My last post had a simple burlap stocking in it.  Here it is:

  • Trace and cutout a stocking shape, then lay a scrap of toile on it and fit a heel and toe around your print (the man and woman in my case) and cut out.
  • Apply them to the front of the stocking using a regular applique method, which is sewing around the cut out piece at 1/4", turning and pressing under, then top-stitching on.  Remember to sew appliques about 1/2" in from the edge to allow for your seam.
  • Sew the front and back of the stocking, right sides together (using both a straight stitch, then a zigzag stitch to prevent fraying), being careful not to sew over the appliques, then turn and press.
  • Using another strip of toile about 18" x 5", hem the edges and gather to make a ruffle.  Stitch onto top of stocking for cuff.
  •  Everything is done on one side of the stocking, the back is plain burlap.  I left the burlap at the top fringed, carefree like.  I think I'd like it better if it was finished off, but I was not taking my time with this one--just slapped it together.  Oh, I almost forgot, for the hanger, I zigzaged a jute loop to the side.  The finished length is about 18".

I wanted to sew several stocking variations, but time's getting away from me.  At some point, I'll plan to feature all of the stocking that you have linked.  The features from two weeks ago:

Gail at Gail's Decorative Touch used her mother's old clothing items and crafted them into Christmas stockings.  What a great idea.  Baby clothes, anyone?

Chocolate Tatertots and Cheerios', Erin, made these cutesy sparrow ornaments.

Stephanie, at Full of Great Ideas , made this Ballard knockoff burlap vase.

Modern Country Lady, repurposed an embroidered tablecloth into throw pillows.  Brilliant!

Don't forget to enter my giveaway - you have until Saturday at midnight!

Your turn:
Remember, these don't have to be items you've made yourself.  Pretty rooms, great deals, vintage finds that contain fabric all count!
The fine print:

Link up rules.  If you don't abide by the "rules," you will surely get COAL in your stocking this year!

1. Link your post, not your general URL. (Click on the title of your post. Copy and paste from your address bar.)  This is important, I was going to feature someone today, but they didn't link properly, so I didn't want to sift through their last two weeks' of posts!

2. Be polite.  Link to this blog with my FFT button or refer to this event in your post so others can join in the fun.

3.  Please no direct Etsy or store links.  It's okay if you are showing us how to do something, then putting it in your store.

4. DO YOU LOVE COMMENTS?  Please try to visit 3 other links and leave a comment.  You'll be glad you did--there are so many talented and friendly people to meet!

  1. Your burlap stocking is just gorgeous and I love the toile green print. Hanging the stockings is the last thing I need to do for Christmas now. Will you hang your's by the fireplace?
    Blessings~

  2. What a cute burlap stocking! I love toile! And the juxtaposition of the toile and burlap is great! (like how I used that big word that I'm not sure if I spelled correctly!)

  3. Love the burlap stocking and the accent fabric. I need to make a couple of new stockings. Love the other features too! I'll be sure to play by the rules so I do not get coal!

  5. I soooo love the green toile and burlap stocking! Absolutely adorable!

I have some with red toile that I'm going to show this week or next.
The more I see green though, the more I just love it!

Thanks for letting me link both my posts up!

    Have a great day Kim!

  6. I want to play at your party!!! I still haven't made anything with fabric, but I'm showing off my sister's country home and she HAS FABRIC STUFF! Does that work? If not, you can take me off and I'll try to sneak something in again next week :)

  7. I love the idea of creating christmas decorations with old clothes. I am looking for inspirational ideas to feature on my next blog post - keepsake ideas for baby clothes. Will be including a link to this blog. Great Idea!
