Make a Hurricane from a Jar Candle

I seem to have an assortment of jar candles.  Do you?  I don't know if it's because I find a fragrance I like, they're easy to come by, they are safer, or I want to match a room's decor.  Probably all of the above.  Then, what do you do when you change colors in a room and have a perfectly good candle sitting around?

Here's the idea that I completely ripped off borrowed from my hair dresser.  Step one:  Find a hurricane at the thrift store.  Oops, this one is a pearly white.  Spray paint it ORB.

Next, take one jar candle and your newly painted hurricane that the jar will fit into.  You will need one more item:  Sand.  I said it, sand.  My hairdresser swears by genuine Sarasota sand, but I'm not convinced that's necessary (although I did have the Chicks smuggle about a half bucket of sand the last time we were at a Sarasota beach.  I guess in a pinch St. Pete sand would work, too.)

This is so easy, your children could do it, (or a caveman, if one's around) if you trust them with the glass.  Put sand in the bottom of your hurricane so the bottom of your candle will sit on it.  You can see in mine, that the bottom rim of my jar candle shows through, which I don't love (this would work better all the way around if the hurricane was a bit larger, but I did find this one at the thrift store after all--I'd really like one with the glass mosaic pieces on it.  Just sayin').

Carefully, place sand in till it's close-ish to the top of the jar.  (Don't worry about trying to get it even, you can gently shake it to get it to level out.)  If it were a little deeper, the jar would sit further down--I guess I'm stating the obvious.  Anyway, for what I paid, I'm happy with it.  You get the idea.  Please tell me you do!

My fave spot for one of these is in a powder room, 'cause it's nice to have a candle in there that feels safe.  But, it's fun in other places, too.  Ha- this looks like a giant roll of bathroom tissue in there.  Gosh, I didn't really need to clean the sink either, but anything for my blog buddies.

If you insist, we'll move it around a little.   Try it here?  Okay.  Someplace else?

As part of a coffee table arrangement?  See all of the places this hurricane can go that the jar wouldn't be as "dressed up" for?  I hope you like this idea as much as I do.

  3. I like it - a great way to camoflauge the jar candle but still use it! Will Bradenton sand work too? I live in Dunedin & we don't really have sand here, but I'll be in Bradenton Beach this weekend. ;)

  4. Now THAT is my kind of craft project! So simple a child, or a cave man, or a really uncrafty lady like me could do it! :-) Would you consider linking this up to my party today? :-)

  11. You know, that green "hurricane" candle was disturbing my mind last night. The thought would have probably stayed burried, if I hadn't seen this post. I don't remember where you had your jar/candle, but I kept looking at it and thinking (subconsciously), "why is that candle buried in all that sand?"

I will sleep better tonight! ;)

  12. As always, another great and clever idea! Your mind must be on overdrive ALL the time! (Oh I know you stole this idea) But you stole it and then implemented it! That's the trick!
