Would You Pay $3 for this Lamp? Challenge

Remember my last Duck Challenge?  Well, I have another one for you.  You guessed it--it's a lamp challenge.  Would you pay $3 for this lamp?  It's rather heavy and the ceramic part is about 18" high.  I guess it's supposed to look like carved stone or something.  It's painted an antique white with gold speckles on it.

This is your challenge:  Would you buy it?  What would you do with it?  Paint - what color?  New shade - what style?  Something else entirely?  Please leave your suggestions in the comment section.  The person with the best idea gets their blog button posted on my side bar for the rest of the month.  Challenge open through Friday, September 17.

Have fun and good luck!

On another note:  Can someone tell me how to use Link To This Post?  I wanted to add the blogs that featured my former Candy Corn post and I've had a few missteps.

  1. Oh yes, I would have bought it and painted it black and used a French inspired lampshade Ü Love it and can't wait to see what you do with it.

Thanks for visiting me over at Pittypat Paperie and leaving the nice comment about my printing on fabric.

  2. The shape reminds me of a ginger jar. I would give it a stark white base coat, then hand paint the carvings a cobalt blue to highlight the area. Next I would put the colbalt blue on the trim pieces on the top and bottom to highlight that area as well. I would top it off with a large white barrel lamp shade. I love it!

  3. yes I would, $3 is a good deal. I like the white look of it....I think I would have my husband fabricate a metal shade. Scuff it up, perhaps a faux rust look on it. Set it next to my bed on the white nightstand that holds a rusty fishing box I put my pens, phone charger etc it. I love the pristine white mixed with old junk look.

  4. I would buy it and paint it black with an antique gold rub to enhance the pattern then I would buy a plain shade that I would cover in a black and ivory damask print to match my newly redone bedroom.

  5. I would buy it in a heartbeat, but I'd have to sit and look at it a few days before deciding what to do with it. (Though I do like Shannon's rust idea!)

  6. Yes...I would buy it! The color would depend on what room I was going to use it in...black...white or maybe aqua...shade would be a drum shade (white). Thanks for coming to my NIFTY THRIFTY TUESDAYS PARTY!

    Blessings,
    Linda

  8. Wow that would be a deal! I don't know what I would do with it? Hmmm...Maybe paint it crisp white with a black shade. ;)

  9. I would paint it an off white then use some stain to bring out the details. As far as the shade, I would probably go with a bell shade with a linen type of fabric.

  10. I would totally buy it! Off white with perhaps a lil Rub n Buff in the detailing! Or some brown shoe polish. And then a burlap drum shade! Oh I love it!

  11. Yes, I'd buy it. I'm going to copy what my sister is doing and cover it completely with seashells. I'd use jute to wrap the top metal section and maybe the bottom as well...and add a rectangular shade. I think it would gorgeous!

  12. Kim,
That is an interesting challenge. I might buy it if I wanted a French Country feel in a room. I blew up the picture and I see Fleur-di-lis which gives away the French detail. It also has a figure on the back that looks like a French "Bishop"? Not sure the French call their clergy "Bishops," but he is dressed like that, almost looks medieval. So all of that makes it really hard to decorate. Maybe paint it a French Country green (sorta sageish green) and then put a mocha glaze over that to bring out the pattern and give it an aged look. Then a traditional shaped toile lampshade in green and ivory would be nice. Fun challenge.

  14. I would paint it high gloss solid white and try to find a solid black square shade, nothing too large. If the figure that is on the back looks anything like a Santos (religious figure), I might try to paint it a solid dark color except for the figure and paint it like the antique retablos with a lot of distressing and antiquing stain. And if I did that, I'd probably take out the electrical parts, add a metal plate or flat bowl to the top and make it a pillar candle holder.

  15. I would prime it a flat black and then use some of the pewter antiquing rub to give it a metallic look. A dark red or burgundy shade with some beading embellishment.

  16. BUY! I would paint it an antiqued copper and hunt for a ivory shade with curves. Unfortunately I do not have a button but would appreciate your help pricing a piece of furniture (current blog)! I've never resold a piece and feel clueless on a good price.

  19. I would buy it and paint it black, like most things that end up in my house. I would recover the shade in a cute solid color fabric and make some fabric rosettes to attach to the shade. I did this recently and would do it again. Here is a pic: http://jenjensen.blogspot.com/2010/08/lamp-shade-redo.html

  20. Definitely!!! It has great 'bones". If you can look past the color or weird finish it will be fabulous!

I would add a squatty drum shade to it in a fun autumn color and then change the shade out for Christmas and Spring and summer. Or better yet create a "slipcover" over one shade and change it out with the seasons etc for added design touch to whatever room it is in! :)

    good luck!

  21. I know I'm late but I would antique this piece with sveral shades of grey, remove the lamp part, replace it with a large stone fleur de lis finial with the same antiquing finish, rub dirt over the whole thing and place it in my garden room or outside on my stone console table.
It has a lovely classical shape but I would never use it as a lamp!
