Thrifty Finds and Bird Sneak Peek

How did everyone do with their bargain hunting this weekend?  Six-Foot Chick and I went to check out a community garage sale and it was a bust.  Then we tried to hunt down another couple of miscellaneous signs and couldn't find them (you know, the sales, not the signs) - argh!  Someone point me to (or do) a blog post about successful yard sale-ing!  My next trial will be looking at CL and putting together a map on Friday night.  Until then, I think I'll stick with thrift stores.

I found this "game board" of sorts while thrifting.  It really was kind of homely.  I first passed it by, but then went back to the store the next day and purchased it.  (I'm so not an impulse shopper, which does have its drawbacks, especially at thrift stores.)
Next came primer.  (I'm a big believer in primer.)

I'm thinking it may have been a shop project.  It doesn't have sides like a tray would and I did a google search on marble games and couldn't find this design.  I thought a client might like it as a faux game board on her coffee table.

I really wanted to remove the handles and add different hardware, but after I took the screws out, they were glued on there really well--that's why they ended up painted silver.
I added wood button feet to the bottom and bought some decorative marbles.  I debated on distressing it, but the home it's for isn't really a distressed one.  I'm asking you:  Does this look like a cool PB game?  No wait, I'll just tell you - it does to me!

My next awesome find came from Big Lots.  I saw these mercury-style cups, I guess they're candle cups, which were regularly $8.  The first time I saw them they were $2.20 and guess what?  I didn't buy them because I wasn't sure what I'd do with them!  Oy.  Needless to say, I could have kicked myself.  Several days later one of the Chicks needed to go back and I thought for sure they'd be gone.  Well, you can see they were still there.  Moved to a different spot and marked down to $1 a piece!  Maybe I should have bought every stinkin' one they had left, but I figured three would do.  (I'm thinking holiday topiaries.)

One more thrift find and a sneak peek.  The upside down, perfect condition, Longaberger mug in this photo shoot was found at GW for $1.06!  I really didn't need another one, but I could NOT leave it there for that price!

Now for my sneak peek!  I'm working on the little birdies.  The one on the left is trial #1 whose dimensions aren't quite right.  Birdie #2 on the mug is better.   I got the idea from another blog (I'll look 'er up before my main post) and wanted to give them a try.

  6. I don't know who "Anonymous" is, so I'll respond here: How funny! No matter how much I would have thought about it, I never would have come to that conclusion :).

  7. I'm not a blogger I just love looking at everything you wonderful bloggers put out there. Hope this helped. "anonymous" was the only way I could get the comment to go through. But it looks cute as a gameboard also. Lisa

  9. Nice job on re-vamping that "tray." I think your little birdie project will be adorable, once you perfect it to the way you want. The "mercury glass" candle holders are sweet, too.

  11. Your game is perfect. Like the finished board. I love mercury glass but can never find it at yard sales. I think it's snapped up first thing. I love your cups. You did good. I tend to stay away from neighborhood sales as it seems to me the whole world is there. I go to the individual ones instead thinking everyone is at the big sales. lol
