Master Ruffles

I'm sure you've all been studying my Smackdown list on the sidebar.  Do recognize the "shower curtain?"  Take a look at the pictures in my post.  See it?  How 'bout now?  Wait a minute - is this the wrong post?  Remember my Mustard post?  Towels and shoes?

The towels are from Echo, I had them on my mind because of the great shower curtain I bought (also from Echo), so made another trip back to the store to get them.  See it now?  The ruffled pillow shams!  Yep, that's it.  The fabric reached out and grabbed me, and wrestled with me to the checkout - it has shades of aqua, great mustard and a pinky-red.  My comforter set looks kind of muddy on the monitor, but it's a pretty, dusty aqua in person.

With all of the ruffles, ruffles, ruffles in style right now, I thought this would be a lot of fun.  I spread the shower curtain out and chose the design I wanted for the front of the sham.  Then I cut strips for the ruffles.  Mine were 3 1/2", then I used my rolled hem presser foot to get them hemmed on each edge quickly.
After each long edge was hemmed, I ran a basting stitch down the middle and gathered.

I laid out the spacing I liked, then drew lines on my sham front with regular pencil.  Then I pinned the ruffled pieces over the line and sewed them on.  For the backs I made a simple envelope closure.

Swoon time...ruffle love.  I'm thinkin' I could also use a smaller red pillow to put in front of them.

With the little fabric I had left, I decided to make a liner for my tray.  Doesn't everyone do that?

See the ruffles peekin' out at the sides?

It's just cut to the size of the bottom of my tray (I didn't have enough fabric to worry about centering a design.)

Then made a couple of ruffles and added them to the ends.  This is so easy.  I didn't do any seam finishing or anything, since I knew it wouldn't be getting a lot of (ab)use.

  3. Lovely! But can someone for the love of God, teach me to do a ruffle? I'd even try it hand-sewing. I have a little machine but much of what you wrote is all Greek to me b/c I'm still quite the novice!

    Sigh! Jeanine
