Pillow Slipcovers!

There are slipcovers for all kinds of home items, why not pillows?  I saw one of these pillows made up quite some time ago at Calico Corners and thought, "What a brilliant idea!"  I have copied this design before--when I found the charming bird fabric that reminds me of barkcloth at an nearby antique store, I snatched it up not knowing what I would do with it.  I decided on this.  What you will need for this project:
~One or two ordinary pillows.  Maybe ones you have, but are tired of.

Confession, I purchased the striped fabric to go with the bird fabric, since I knew it would be tucked in, I didn't even bother finishing the last side off.  If you do the same thing, there are NO fancy sewing techniques here, just sew flat squares together.

~Next select show fabric, with your show fabric, cut two more pieces of fabric.  These will not be square.  You will want add just a little extra to the side since you will be making a "tuck" in the corner.  Again, nothing fancy.  See the corner below, after you stitch around three sides, sew across the corner approx. 2" so you get a bit of a pocket after it is sewn.  If you get the side dimension wrong, you can trim it before the next step.
~Seam binding:  Turn your slipcover right side out.  Sew seam binding over the raw edge.  Sew the length of the ties shut.  Place the ties where you want them on your slip cover, fold over the raw edges and sew securely on.

Let's put on the brakes for a minute.  I totally skipped the seam binding part.  I previously did a tutorial on making your own ties, which you can check out OR and you're going to love this--you can purchase double fold bias tape at the fabric store and everything's already done for you, you just have to sew it on.
Now, all's you have to do is stuff the pillow into it's slipcover and tie, put on the sofa or chair of your choice and enjoy!

  4. I love the look of these! Those fabrics look perfect together and it is a great way to jazz up a boring pillow. I really like the ties on the sides. That makes these for me. Thanks for being "cheeky" and inviting me over. :) You were right...this is my kind of thing!

  5. Such a pretty home, Kim! Love the slip cover idea :)

I finally made some pillows, but still have yet to tackle the dot ones like you made in the PB knock off room. I think it's because I'm scared to wind a new bobbin and new thread color on my machine? If it weren't for that, I'd be a sewing fool!

Thanks again for the great inspiration :)
