Make A Sliver Clock!

I am so tickled - squeal! -
(This is the blog post I thought I would do last week, but things just didn't go my way.)

My new sliver clock is a problem solved! Can you see it?
Every evening when our family has dinner, I sit in the chair in the foreground. I sit here for coffee and sometimes blogging, too. I have several clocks around this area, but I can't see any from this spot.

I was inspired by a "sliver" clock I have seen at Target. It is currently selling in the store for $69.99. (It's not on their on website, or I would have included a photo.) Now, in all fairness it is larger and a contemporary style, but the concept is the same. When I first saw it at the store, I was both attracted to it and repelled by it at the same time - if ya know what I mean. Eventually, I realized this style of clock could help my predicament.

First I rummaged in the garage and found a scrap piece of molding. Then I cut it to the length I wanted - mine is about 21 inches. I just used a hand saw. Then I drilled a hole in the middle for the clock works.

The original piece was I chose was a little too deep, so I swapped it out for this one. (Pretty much a standard baseboard.) Then I primed it and painted it the same color as my baseboards and moldings.

This was my second inspiration piece. This clock is hung just outside the kitchen nook area, so I wanted to try to replicate the numbers.

Using the hole I drilled, I used a pencil and string as a compass to round out the ends where it would be if it was a whole circular clock (if you have the right saw - jig? - you could cut the ends so they are curved.) I painted the ends the same color as the wall to give an illusion of a round clock slice.

Using my quilting ruler I kind of free-handed the Roman numerals. I was out of metallic gold paint, so I just used a regular gold color. Then I (obviously!) free handed the little minute hash marks. I'm sure I could make these a little neater!

After all the painting was done, I glazed it. I was going to try to roll a crumbled bag or something to get a crackled look like my black clock, but for some reason the glaze just "stuck" where it landed pretty much, so I rubbed it as best I could.

Lastly, I added the clock works. I purchased them at JoAnn's. They have three sizes of clock stems at my store, which I didn't realize till after I got home. Originally, I purchased the 3/4" stem which was too long. I had to return it for a 3/8" stem which was just right. I like the way the hands are too long for the width of the board-- which adds to the "slice" illusion.

Can you see all kinds of places for one of these to hang out?!
If you make one, please share, I would love to show some off!

I am going to be adding this post to Linky parties. Please take a look at all the other linkers at these kind and creative ladies' blogs.

  2. Hi Kim:
Love your clock and the instructions, too. Gotta love a gal who isn't afraid of power tools! I asked for a dremel tool set for my birthday or Christmas (both in December for me). Husband loves it when I ask for "guy toys". ;-)

  4. I did a manual pick with strips of paper in a bowl. It was pretty time consuming. Let me know how the electronic goes and how to do it for next time.

  9. You did a great job. I shop at Target but I don't remember seeing that particular clock. There was one with a red frame I have had my eyes on for a while. I double checked to see if I did click the follow button on your site or not. I did. I don't know why but it is set up as btowsley. I was not sure how it was set up. When I got my blog set and titled I could not use the title for the address. Must be someone out there in blog land had already used it.
