Deconstructed and Rustic Thanksgiving Decor

It's not like I waited till the last minute or anything, right?  This was such fast decorating, it doesn't really matter.  This ragtag cornucopia was hanging around in the craft area in the laundry room for a year, found at the thrift store for $3.  It had a few rows left of reed weaving around the upper portion, the rest was taken off or was possibly damaged and removed.

I guess it was last year that someone had used one of these old frames and had woven burlap or strips of a drop cloth through it.  I thought I may do the same thing.  Then it occurred to me, how cool would it look "deconstructed."  It took a couple of minutes to pull out the remaining reeds and put in the vegetables.  I really like it.

Since one wire cornucopia would have been a wimpy post, I decided to switch out my buffet (I was getting tired of the black and white, anyway).  I took several of the more rustic elements out of my hutch, added additional items and rustic-ed away!

You may be wondering why I'd bother to change this at all with Thanksgiving so close.  (Well, if you're a blogger, maybe you wouldn't...)

This Wednesday, instead of pre-preparing my Thanksgiving meal, I'll be picking up Six-Foot Chick.  Healthy Chick is working 12-hr. shifts Wed.-Fri., so we're having our Thanksgiving dinner on Saturday.  So.  Since I'm going to be rearranging everything anyway for the Christmas stuff...I decided to do this.

Even though it's messing with tradition, I'm kind of looking forward to it.  Wednesday we are going to get all of the Christmas decorations down from the attic and start putting those up.   I'm planning on putting dinner in the crock pot and making a couple of dips.  Doesn't that sound fun?  So, when we're having our Thanksgiving dinner on Saturday, most of the pretty tree lights will be up.

Now for a tip:  For a fabric base, try using a drapery panel.  This is a single-layer crinkle one that you've probably seen at some point here before.  I like the generous amount of fabric, since when I need to add "lifts" to the Paris Lazy Susan (it's a box), and the scale (a stack of paper plates), I can just tuck them under the fabric.  I used a bowl turned upside down under the pumpkin--the straight sides make me crazy as a bowl, but I love it as a lift!

Are you having a non-traditional Thanksgiving this year?

  1. Your buffet looks so pretty, Kim! It goes so well with everything you've got going on in this room. My hubby is in retail so I understand. We'll be going to my daughter, who is hosting for the first time. I'm sure my hubby will take off about 6 to catch some sleep before he has to head out.

  5. Yes, thank goodness - traditional all the way. Last year was awful with my mom in the hospital unexpectedly right before Thanksgiving and me throwing together a last minute Thanksgiving meal using prepared food from Trader Joe's and getting what was leftover at the store the day before. It was a nightmare. But this year, God-willing, it'll be Thanksgiving at my parents' house with all the traditional, homemade fixin's.

  6. Your Thanksgiving sounds like ones from my past few years. My daughter has not been home for Thanksgiving in 4 years and we don't have family in town so my husband, son and I went to the movies last year. It was a great holiday and I think my son will remember it fondly. This year we are going super traditional, we have been invited to friends and I am taking the pumpkin pies. My Christmas decorations are making their first appearance on Weds.
It doesn't mather what day it is on, just that you are with friends and family. Have a great day.
