Planning a Guest Room

Hey all!  Thanks for the warm wishes on the new (first) grandbaby coming our way.  I did a lot of sewing this weekend for the craft fair~~there's a couple of Christmas projects I want to show you, but thought I'd wait a few days before I crack out the Santas and stockings.

In the meantime, one of the projects on my to-do list is our spareforthetimebeingtillsomeonecomeshomefromcollege bedroom.  Let's take a look at what we have.  The compact bedroom that was mainly Strapping Lad's, used temporarily by Healthy Chick, is in a state of abandonment, which I guess isn't such a bad thing since it is empty and not packed with left-behind clothing and memorabilia, that stuff would be in Darling Husband's office.  Do you think your eyes can stand the ratty "before" images?

Photos L-R.  The dresser was mine--I received it for my high school graduation, so it's practically new vintage.  It's got several nicks and a drawer pull with a screw loose.  The original curtains were replaced by HC, then SL, who took his to school with him.  I threw the blanket over the black microsuede headboard to keep it from fading.  The Sponge Bob comforter is really a twin size.   I'm thinking the chest would do well with a coat of ASCP in one of the whites, leaving the top a dark stain to tie in with the ladder shelf.  Bottom left photo shows where the entrance is.  The shelf is really a great piece for the room since it's vertical storage and the shelves graduate in size, so they can hold quite a bit.  It used to contain Strapping Lad's game system, extra books, art supplies and awards.  (Extra bedding--not so much.)

I found some bedrooms for inspiration and added them to my Pin board.  Here are a few:

from countryliving.com
I'd love to incorporate a raised bed as it makes the space seem more airy.

This is a lot of impact in a small space.  I'd like to get a small round side table for a nightstand since the space is so tight and the walls are curved.

I think this look could totally rock in the room.  I was planning on leaving the current paint color--it's not "statement making," but doesn't really need anything but touchups.  The black elements, such as the headboard, ceiling fan, and curtain rod are staying that way, at least for the time being.

These KAS Oslo prints have stolen my heart since they first came in at JoAnns.  Can't you just see them as pillow shams and draperies with the black headboard and a solid comforter???   I'm not a "blue" person, so the purple would be the rockin-est!  I think I'll get a sample of each the next time I'm at the store and see what they'd look like in the room.  Hmm, maybe I will have to repaint.

Do you think I can pull this off by the holidays?  Do you think the bird fabric is too girly?  I was hoping it would look more "mod" and less feminine.  To do check list: 1) Clean, 2) Move bed, 3) Raise bed?, 4) Make pillow shams and draperies, 5) Buy comforter, 6) Paint dresser (that could wait till after the holidays), 7) New table and/or accessories.  At least I have a game plan--I could probably use a game face, too!

  1. I'm in the same boat with our guest bedroom, Kim. You've got a great size room to work with. I love the ladder look shelving and that it gives you some vertical storage. I have the furniture and I'm working with a slate blue/gray that the previous owner painted. I'm going to see if I can deal with that color before I decide to paint. I also need to have this room done by the holidays as my son will be coming to visit. I would definitely paint the dresser. I have two side tables that I would need to paint as well.

I saw a comforter set I liked on the Target website and just threw up some curtains from the old house. I may have a Queen sheet set that works, but since I only found the pillow cases so far, I'm not sure that it is a Queen set. Here's wishing us both luck in getting it done! : )

  3. I think those plans sound very promising! Love that birdy fabric - not too feminine, no. Aahh, painting....I love the results, hate the process! Can't wait to see this room!

  4. Cute fabric. It's not overly girly..and it is fun! Is the room yellow-or is that just the lighting? I'd say it picks up the yellow in that fabric. It would be cool to raise the bed..but then you would have to make a longer skirt to cover it unless you can find a high bedframe with nice legs or bottom.

LOVE the ladder and that is a great idea to leave the top of the dresser stained to match. Have fun-can't wait to see the pictures. xo Diana

  5. The furniture you have will be great with the ASCP. The fabric is far from 'girlie', it's more of a neutral. Can't wait to see when you finish. BTW, I made your burlap ruffle this morning. I love it. Next I want to make some pillows, when I get to the master bedroom. You have a real talent.

  6. Sounds like you have a great plan in place. I love the fabric you've chosen. May I suggest Mackenzie-Child's CHELTENHAM ROUND KNOBS to make your dresser pop w/ that fabric;-)

  7. Love, love, love the fabric, the mood, and all your ideas. You have a great vision and I great plan. Can you do all this by Christmas ? You probably can! I know I couldn't. But you can. You probably have half it done already.

  9. I see you're on to another project! What would we do without them? :) I'm loving that fabric! Yes, I think it's quite mod. Mod in a slight Partridge Family kind of way! And believe me, that is a compliment! I loved that show! LOL!
Can't to see how you transform this room!

  10. I can totally relate to guest room planning because I am in the middle of it right now! I finally finished a headboard I've been putting off for awhile. Now, it is time for wall art and other decorative items.
I love the bird fabric and definitely do not consider it too feminine. Great choice!
