Skirted Drapery Panels

Hi everyone, I know it's only Monday, but how is your week going so far?  Maybe I should ask, how was your weekend?  Get any projects started?  Done?  Do you remember a few weeks ago, I painted my mom's bedroom?  Today, I hung her new window treatments.  I experimented with the design and added a border with a gathered-skirt feel.

I really, really, really, tried to emulate my talented friend, Sonya's, style.  I was semi-successful, as in, "not bad, for a first try..."  Let me give you a quick reminder of the room the last time you saw it.

The room was built around this pillow sham in the foreground.  The great coral fabric is from the collection that I carry (Kasmir).  The green border fabric and ribbon were purchased at JoAnns.

I don't know if you can tell very well, but the left green is dull and the right green is shiny.  I was going to sew the dull, back side out, but heard Sonya's voice in my head telling me to use the shiny side--ha, she also confirmed the voice in my head in an e-mail!  The fringe was just set up there to get an idea of how trim would look.

You can see that the header is definitely not droopy.  I was wanting to do a more droopy header--I think I will still give-it-a-go--by spacing out the rings.  These photos were taken in a huge hurry as I was running late to pick up Fun-Sized Chick from school, so, sorry, this is not so good.  The drapery rings were still tacky and wet from spray paint and glaze.  Of course, there weren't the same color of rings that I wanted that matched the drapery rod.  The right panel is bowed out from either a bad ironing job, not fussing with them, or the fabric hitting the floor slightly...?

The panels are the width of the fabric, so about 54".  I cut the skirt at 1 1/2 width, so about 77" wide.  The entire panel is lined.  The wall is pretty close on the left-hand side, so the rod brackets are 7" out from the window.

A side note about the headboard--it was purchased on CL, for, I think, $20.  It was pine that got a white coat of paint and mocha glaze to go with her wicker (above).  See the new pillow in the middle?  It was made out of the sample piece of fabric last seen HERE.  The reverse side is the coral drapery fabric.  I pleated the corners (If you look closely you can see it on the bottom.) by making two folds toward the point then sewing flat.  The piping was sewn around the entire seam.  The corner pleats make it a fun, plump pillow.  Being the hang-and-run decorator that I was today, I'll let you in on a little secret.  Since I didn't have a pillow form the right size, the new pillow is stuffed with plastic grocery bags!   (Blue pillowcases, while not bad, are really not part of the for-show decor scheme.)  The room is really shaping up to be a nice mix of relaxing, tropical, feminine and fresh.

  1. I love the orange print on the new drapes. It may be coral anyway I really like it. Your etsy shop going up soon? I still don't see it on your sidebar. I want the pillows but I don't want you to commit to making them if you've got other stuff to do.

  4. You did a great job, Kim! I'm thinking I will probably make the drapes for my sunroom, but there are 7 windows in there and I'm going to have to get creative. I'd like to do a fun fabric in there so maybe two or three fabrics would be the way to go. I'm going to hit Hobby Lobby and see if anything catches my eye.

  7. Hey Kim! I think they look great! The coral fabric is a great choice in both color and the print. I really like the way the blue ribbon divides the two colors. As my daugter loves to point out, it doesn't have to match to "go together". I think this is what makes a room flow. When things "go together" without being matchy! Great job, my friend!

  10. The drapes turned out SO cute! I love the happy colors. :) It reminds me that my kitchen slider-door curtains are about 1 1/2 inches too short. Been meaning to add a panel of fabric to the bottom.... I really like the ribbon idea!
