Here is my redone little thrift table. Do you remember my $7 find?
It had the 80s golden oak vibe--see it vibing?. I sanded it with my hand sander first, then by hand (that sounds redundant) did the turned legs. I was thinking about trying to cut off the scalloped portions, but a) ran out of time, and b) didn't know if it would really "modern it up" with the shape of the legs anyway. I then gave it a coat of SW bonding primer. You know, just in case. (I don't have any of the awesomeness that is chalk paint. Yet.)
It's a gift for Healthy Chick. She thought it would be great for her and her Darling Fiancé's new apartment and offered to buy it from me for $10 before the makeover. Afterward, the price is going up!!! Just kidding, it's a gift, people!
It got two coats of black paint. I could see it could use a couple of touch ups as I was waxing it, sigh.
I swapped out the handle. I really wanted one that didn't have this extra hoo-ha on it, but it fit the already-drilled holes at 3". Wouldn't you know, gah!, that when I put it in the existing holes, the ornament portion went higher than the drawer top, so I had to redrill the holes, anyway. I'm not very good at that even when I think I have precisely marked them, etc.
I'm not generally heavy-handed when it comes to distressing and was even less so with this piece, as I'm pretty certain Darling Financé is not familiar with how great distressing makes wooden furniture look and would wonder why future MIL would scuff up his new furniture.
Healthy Chick is a little more contemporary than I am--which is great. So her aesthetic is younger. Translation: I ain't hip! But I do play someone who is on my blog - ha! She made the pretty pillow on the chair.
I can see putting a basket on this bottom shelf to hold newspapers or magazines. All in all not bad for about $12!
I'll be linking with these sweet ladies:
Nice job!

ReplyDeleteI LOVE it....it turned out incredible! :)
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, it turned out fabulous. I can't believe what some paint can do to totally transform a piece. I really like the new pull also. The vignette is stunning too. I know they will both love it, such a great piece. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteOh, too cute! I love a scattering of black in a room. Takes on a whole new look. Does she get the chair as well? You did good, Mom.
ReplyDeleteVery nice Kim. I want to paint my kitchen chairs black to match my hutch but I'm a chicken. Don't know what I am doing and afraid it would turn out terrible. You did a real nice job on that end table!~Ames
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I really love black painted furniture and did my "1970's cane-back chairs" in black--love it. Your home is beautiful. Patty
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful table, Kim. Great work. I'm sure they will enjoy having such a solid piece of furniture for their first home together. I'm loving the vignette with the chair also, but then I'm crazy about black painted pieces and Windsor chairs.
ReplyDeleteKim:
ReplyDeleteWhat a great makeover! Isn't it just so fun to update a cast off table like that? They are so much better made than what you can buy new now.
Regarding the chalk paint--I got a quart of Paris Grey, a quart of Provence (a wonderful blue/green) and a can of the dark soft wax. It was hard to decide what colors to order. Just start with a couple that you like. I haven't done much in grey and really love the way the Paris Grey with the dark wax worked out.
I'm about to order some red and some clear wax next.
You'll love playing with it.

Beautiful! And very inspiring. It's garage sale season here in WI and I am ready to look at things differently now.
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous. I think it's a perfect balance of "hip" and classic :)
ReplyDeleteOK.... I know I'm older than you, but could you please adopt me? LOL It's really a stunning transformation. I have a tall cupboard in my downstairs bath that was supposed to be "mildly distresed" when we ordered it, but hubs picked it up while I was out of town and it's more like "wildly distressed". I now know what I'm going to do with it. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!!!
