Inspiration, inspiration! While I was out thrifting last week, I saw this collection of Johnson Bros. ironstone. It included three dinner plates, three saucers and six bowls. (One dinner plate and one saucer is chipped.) I want your honest opinion of whether or not I overpaid. Yadda, yadda, I know one has to weigh the value to oneself, etc., but that's not what I'm talkin' about. Would you have purchased it? (For the record, I did not buy it the day I saw it, but went back the next day. Talk about livin' on the edge!)
At first I put it in the cupboard and the Chicks were happily using it. No problem. I knew that I wanted to put them in my hutch which is their current, happy new (temporary) home.
Now for my inspiration, in no particular order. 1) Ironstone. Sooo many bloggers {heart} this stuff I had to investigate. 2) Transferware. For years I've admired transferware, but never have purchased any.
3) Brown. For some reason, brown's really appealing to me this season. 4) Christmas. The reason for the satin ribbon and glitter. More of that later in the post.
5) The No. 25. (you know, "December") From both Maison de Stencils and Jane at Mamie Jane's. Jane's also responsible for the ironstone in the ribbon-wrapped baskets. I hurried to copy her! Thanks, Jane ;).
Not having cool vintage numbers, I had to buy my own, paint and distress. (I think I'm going to dangle them from ribbon, too (just like Jane), but I'm still pondering that.)
6) Manuela mentioned Johnson Bros.
7) Baskets, I have in abundance.
Have you seen enough to make a decision? Keep scrolling.
Ironstone cost $25.
I can see I need to fill in the bottom right with another white tray or something, I'll get on that! Now for the glitter portion of this blog post...
I completely copied this from another blogger. I'm so sorry I don't remember who. Between the Fun Sized Chick and me we found acorn tops and acorns.
I hot glued the acorns back to the tops (NOT what God intended), brushed the acorns with mod podge and sprinkled MS brown glitter over them.
One more thing. If you have a minute, stop over and say "Hi" to my friend, Claire, at Bless My Nest. She's just short of 100 followers and is hoping to hit 100 soon to have a Matthew Mead Holiday magazine giveaway. Here's her most recent project:

Beautiful display ideas! Did you pay too much? As a lover of transferware and owner of lots of Johnson Brothers, I say ..... Not if you love it as well! I have lots of odds and ends pieces in all colors and love to mix it all up!! Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't look like you paid too much when Ebay is selling three dishes for $19.99.

ReplyDeleteYour hutch looks magazine good. Did you pay too much? I don't think so. That stuff is very collectible. Love the acorns and the numbers. I might copy that.
ReplyDeleteOh I love your dishes and the price sounds just right to me. I think you did good. Love them displayed in the baskets and tubs and the ribbon wrapped around is gorgeous. Beautiful display on your hutch. LOVE it. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteI love love love them and I do NOT think you paid too much! If you didn't buy them, if you are like me, you would have kicked yourself over and over for not having gotten them! Cos' that is how I roll! lol Love them in the hutch, love them in the baskets! I adore Jane too! She has the BEST ideas! AND she shares them! lol
ReplyDeleteI am drawn to the brown transferware too! It is just so versatile! And being that I am a FREAK for glitter....LOVE the acorns!
Have a great week!
Lou Cinda :)
I love the look. If you price out each piece it ends up costing around $2.08 (give or take) per peice. If you are comfortable paying $4.16 for two chipped pieces then you did well. I think so anyway. And if you hadn't told us about the chips we would have never known. You have them displayed so well. Maybe you can find more pieces down the road. Love the look!~Ames
ReplyDeleteBeautiful transferware! I would have gone for it at $25 too! Great buy!
ReplyDeleteSandra
OF COURSE YOU OVERPAID! hahaha. NOT. I honestly have no idea, but you certainly put together a $500 look for $25, so in that regard, you got yourself a bargain, Kim.
ReplyDeleteI adore your acorns, (even thought the utilization of hot glue wasn't what God intended -- you are so funny).
Great post.
Your hutch is just beautiful....love the way you have everything displayed :o) Those numbers and acorns are so cute...I might have to borrow that idea! Happy Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteKristen

A girl's gotta have some ironstone in her collection and these are transferware and Johnson Brothers on top of it, so I don't think you paid too much. Your hutch is bery cute.
ReplyDeleteI think they are wonderful & don't believe you paid too much. I love the rich brown that you used quite a bit. It's just yummy.
ReplyDeleteCAR
I love your hutch display. Lots of interest. I agree with everyone else. You wouldn't get that many new pieces for that price, let alone ironstone.
ReplyDeleteYour hutch and display looks wonderful. I have a few of these same plates I have purchased at different antique malls and I love them. Yours looks great with the white ironstone.
ReplyDeleteHugs, Sherry
Beautiful! Be careful though when you bring acorns in. They sometimes come with little worms in them.
ReplyDeleteI wish I knew more about ironstone! I have NO idea about the value. But they sure are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about brown. I've had to tell myself NO MORE BROWN! Time to move on to another color! It's not working!
Have a Blessed Thanksgiving!
Beautiful display! Love the brown ribbon and number added to your Johnson Bros (pattern is Old Mill) transferware and ironstone vignette.
ReplyDeleteI don't have any plain white ironstone but each time I see it displayed like yours or in a similar fashion, with transferware, I just ooh and aww!
Since I sell vintage transferware for a living...I can say you didn't pay too much. And when you think of the whole look you created...WOW!!! Whoever said it looks like $500 was right!
Great post!
Nancy

Love the brown transferware. Sounds like a good price to me. I would have paid it.
ReplyDeleteI do not have any pieces by that maker, however it sure is beautiful and looks fantastic! I have a good feeling you will cherish it always, so my answer is NO you did not pay too much. Enjoy the holiday.
ReplyDeleteDamn, indeed nice article. Where can I get that RSS?

I love the dishes in the bow tied baskets! Might have to steal it.
ReplyDeleteOk, cost. What cost is to high if you love it? Given that you were still thinking about it the next day shows that it was on your mind. I adore my red transferware and wish I had the space to collect every color. Johnson Bros. is a good brand. I have quite a bit.
Now enjoy.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
I would have paid that, Kim. I love it in your hutch and the brown is my favorite, too. I've been reading all about Johnson Bros. all over the place on different blogs and I'm hoping that means I might come across some myself! Love it in the container ~ that Jane has some good ideas! ; ) Enjoy it; you must have really wanted it to go back for it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this post on the Boardwalk Bragfest, Kim. I really love your display and those gorgeous acorns. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteI have no idea whether or not you got a deal but they sure look pretty.
ReplyDeleteHere in Toronto, that would be a good deal!
ReplyDeleteEverything looks lovely!!
I think you got a great deal! And they are beautiful. I love your hutch and baskets and I'd love to make some of those darling acorns!
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving! :-)
XO,
Jane
Oh so beautiful. Then you add over the top acorns! Awesome.
ReplyDeleteYou did good!
ReplyDeleteYou end up regretting more the things you don't buy then the things you do.
You are right about brown looking good this year - I have not been a fan of brown in the past, but now... Well check out my brown transfer ware. I didn't buy it the first or second time I saw it....
P.S. I love that you have hutch as a keyword. I have that as a search word too. I am now going to see all the things you have done with your hutch.
Opps! I forgot to put the link up to my transferware.

I used to sell Longaberger baskets years and years ago... I had 50 in my house at one time.... only a few left now.. Including two JW baskets, a cookie basket and the candy cane basket from eons ago.....all stored out in the garage. One of these days I'm going to get it all together and sell the darn things on eBay.
ReplyDeleteI LOVED the acorns. I'm going to be on a quest to find some for myself....how CUTE! That's one of the best things about Bloggyville....unlimited ideas and tips.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
Warm blessings,
Spencer
