Lamp Reveal and Winner - Finally!

Drum roll!  It took me quite some time to get this completed.  It's not like it was overly complicated or anything.  However, I've had an busy and stressful week, so my blog projects got back-burnered.  There were a couple of trial and errors involved, as well.  As you can see, I de-lamped it.  It is now an urn and is residing in my master bath.

Let me tell you about the challenge winners, before I tell you what all I did.   I am totally flabbergasted at all of the great ideas for this one orphaned lamp!  Here are my top picks:

 #1 Winner
Sharlotte from Ms. Sharlotte's Southern Reflections said:  Yes, I'd buy it. I'm going to copy what my sister is doing and cover it completely with seashells. I'd use jute to wrap the top metal section and maybe the bottom as well...and add a rectangular shade. I think it would gorgeous!

#2 Runner Up
Pam from clustres says, I would paint it high gloss solid white and try to find a solid black square shade, nothing too large. If the figure that is on the back looks anything like a Santos (religious figure), I might try to paint it a solid dark color except for the figure and paint it like the antique retablos with a lot of distressing and antiquing stain. And if I did that, I'd probably take out the electrical parts, add a metal plate or flat bowl to the top and make it a pillar candle holder.

Honorable Mention
I'm going to give an honorable mention to my friend Debbie from Love the Decor, because she'd do exactly what I did!  I guess that's why we're friends.

The lamp started out kind of an off-white with gold speckles.  I was going to put it in my dining room, but changed my mind.  I had always intended to make it an urn.

Turquoise, anyone?  Go ahead and laugh, I did!  I spray painted it gold--so far, so good--then painted this color over it.  Truly.  It looks like a grade school project of some sort.

Take II:  I started spray painting it ORB.  That seemed too black.  Sooooo, Take III:  I used hammered brown on part of it.  Yeah, baby, it's two colors.

With chandy {eye} candy!

Okay, but you can still see some gold, right?  Know what happened?

If you follow me on Twitter you already know:  Rub 'n Buff is my new BFF!  I purchased Antique Gold.  Not because I wanted antique gold, but my local M*chael's store hasn't stocked up in over a month and it was either that or an opened gold leaf or patina (which I assume is a green color--WHY they don't put sample dots of some sort on the packaging is a mystery to me).

So I Rubbed.   And I Buffed.  It's so fun!  The photo on the packing does show a finger being used to rub.  I wouldn't suggest that, because it doesn't wash off easily.  I found using an old cloth worked the best and a little goes a long way.

Yea!  I got this posted - I was interrupted about a ka-zillion times answering questions about King Lear.

  10. Hi Kim,
Thanks so much for the alert! Yipee! Thanks too for picking up my button...you are so kind.

I really like your "new" urn...it really is pretty and the tutorial is good info. I haven't used Rub 'N Buff before, but my mother {who is sitting right here} is reading your blog along with me. She loves it too! She has experience with the Rub 'N Buff and only found it in the tube at her local craft store, Hobby Lobby. She too found it difficult to get off her finger, had to use paint thinner!

Thanks again for dropping by. I'm going to post my sister's lamp with the seashells, it's gorgeous! See you soon!

  14. Thanks so much for using and posting about AMACO's Rub 'n Buff. We love this product too! I've found that it will come right off your hands if you use disposable wipes designed to remove paint from your hands (similar to Chlorox Wipes, but for removing paint) that are available in the hardware store. There are also 17 colors available of RNB, see AMACO.com to look at the colors. I'll be happy to send some to try!
