Duck Challenge Winner and Reveal

It all started with this lovely duck plaque and a challenge that I threw out for you all.  I got such a kick out of reading your suggestions, I appreciate you all playing along.  I'm going to have to do it again sometime.   Of the twenty-seven suggestions I received here is a sample:
  • Six of you would paint it
  • Five would paint it, plus something extra
  • Four of you would NOT buy it
  • Two of you were joke-sters:  Laura from Decor to Adore would make a bill holder "Duck Bills"   Amy, from Whisper Wood Cottage's husband, would use it to make a duck platter for "quackers."
  • Honorable Mentions
  • Polly from Make Mine Beautiful would make a personal snack table.  Erin from chocolate tater tots & cheerios  would paint it in girly colors and hang it so it could be a dress-up duck with eyelashes and everything.
The No. 1 Winner is Traci from Three Dogs At Home for her idea of making a lazy-Susan spice rack, painted apple green and antiqued with a vase and single flower in the middle, using her antique salt and pepper shakers.  Can't you just envision it?
Now onto the real scoop about what happened to Duck-bert.  He got pried off and went to duck heaven, which, in this case, would be my kitchen trash.  He was nailed on with the addition of a few dabs of wood glue.  You can (kinda with my superior photography skills) see where the wood got pulled up with the glue.  I started by painting on a watered down white paint--but that didn't work for me at all.  It then got a coat of mocha glaze mixed with black paint.  (Which looks a lot like driftwood, if you need to note for other projects.)

I also glued in three addition wood buttons to cover the screw holes, so it wouldn't wobble when I turned it over.  I'd tell you I'm classy like that, but then you would have already figured that out since I did purchase the duck plaque after all!

Remember my dresser redo?  Well, I liked those handles so much, I put them away for a later use.  Are you getting the picture?  Now is "later."  This is where they come in.
They are perfect for covering this hanging notch--if the holes are drilled in the right spots.
Now, what color should those handles be?  The old bronze doesn't look good.  Neither does this silver, (with a black "glaze" over it) either.
How about ORB?  Perfect!  I'm lovin' the dinged up sides of the wood, too.  You know, before this project, I was an ORB virgin?  (I bet you read that all the time.  That's a joke, people!)   Oh, and, after viewing this photo, I went back outside and resprayed the ends.
Ahhhh.
The perfect tray (what do you know, Ron, a.k.a. Mr. WisperWood was right!)  for my dining room redo.  And looky, looky--another table runner--it's the tease from yesterday's Fabric Fun Thursday.  It's the same pattern as my "round" burlap runner.
 "beauty shot"
If the handles where less antique-looking and more transitional looking, or even twig-looking, you know this tray would be sitting in the PB catalog. I guess this would be the right time to say something mature like "Na na na boo boo!"  Next week, I should be ready to show you the entire dining room.  In the meantime, I'm linking with:

  11. What a beautiful tray! It would fit in perfect at my house with the green plate. I didn't have any suggestions because the duck really "threw" me. I can't imagine anything else other than removing the duck. lol That was late 1980's? We stenciled ducks on the wall of the stairway at my mom's house & it was still there when I got married in 1995...yikes...
