Easiest & Cheapest Bed Crown Ever!

I picked up this little ledge shelf awhile ago because I thought it was cute and it was cheap, cheap, cheap (about $4).  I didn't have any idea what I was going to do with it.  See it above the bed?  Yep, way up there near the ceiling.

Fast forward to putting together my bedroom.  I love the idea of bed crowns, but thought all of those yards and yards of fabric would cost a fortune.

One day I was looking at my cheapy shelf wondering if I should just donate it then had an idea!  I bought a dowel, cut it in two lengths to fit through the cutout sides of the shelf.

This is the back layer closest to the wall.  I took two drapery panels that the former owner had left here and jammed them on the rod.  (Yes, jammed, that's not a lot of space.)

For the second dowel piece, I purchased a premade valance for $8 on clearance with a V shape and beading.  That gets jammed on, too.

The fabric header gets tucked in.

Lastly, it gets hung on two screws as close to the ceiling as possible.

Sorry for the poor quality picture(s).

The fabric is pinned into the wall with a straight pin on each side.
One final note:  See the headboard?
It is the original one we bought when we got married (over 20 yrs. ago!).  It was originally that "yummy" bright brass that was everywhere back then - it got hammered bronze spray paint, what else?
Here are a couple of other bed crowns for you to check out:

  19. I WANT ONE! I love how you 'jammed' the fabric in and used a straight pin. That's my kind of decorating! I once stapled a valance on panels. I say this as my brand.spankin.new sewing machine sits in the other room.
Seriously, what a beautiful project. I've just got to do something w/our bed.
