Let Me Be Your Test Kitchen!

Generally, I'm an accomplished baker.  I like baking much more than cooking, probably because eating it seems like so much more fun, plus, you don't have to do it!  Yesterday, I was invited to a cookie exchange.  (I haven't been to one in over ten years!)  I wanted to make something special, Christmasy, fussy-but not overly so.  Many years ago I made an unusual pinwheel cookie and thought, surely, in this day of Google, I'd be able to find a very similar recipe.  You can see where this is going already, can't you?

I found this Pinwheel Cookie recipe at allrecipes.com.

Don't let this one little, perfect, innocent cookie fool you!

Let me make a disclaimer:  While I was putting these cookies together I was trying to listen to a podcast and talk on the phone, and the recipe was on the computer, so I had to keep turning around and hitting my mouse pad so the screen would light up again!
The challenging part was after the dough was rolled out I had to layer them.  I tried putting one of the colors over my rolling pin like you would a pie crust, but the dough was so delicate it mostly just ripped.  So, I got it on there as best I could.

THEN I WAS SUPPOSED TO CHILL IT FOR AT LEAST 8 HOURS!  Did I mention I was making these at about 1 p.m. for a party later that day?  I stuck the dough in the freezer for about an hour than put it in the fridge till about 5:30 p.m.  The slicing and baking worked just fine, but since I had such a difficult time with the dough, many of the slices did not look like pinwheels at all.  (The recipe also said to halve the dough and add red to one and green to the other.  I wish I would have left half of the dough white and divided the other half into green and red (Oh, and I was out of red food coloring, so used hot pink!)  After I baked the first batch I added the big chunky sugar pieces to give them a "little something extra".  (My picture, below, seems to not have the sugar on them.)

They taste fab, but oh, what a journey!

So, if I could say this in Latin, I would:  Let the baker beware (or at least not distracted!).
