Make Your Own Decorative Orbs - DIY SHOW OFF

While I was looking at Roeshel's blog DIY Show Off,

I saw an "after" pic of her stairway landing.
The transformation is amazing!
(If you would like to see the entire project click on DIY Show Off.)

What really caught my eye was the
two spheres
she had on clear glass candlestick holders.

What were they made of?
and
Could I replicate them?

Roeshel, the DIY Show Off, herself, was kind enough
to share her photos and what she did.
~
The spheres on the candle holders are styrofoam
1. Mod Podge and vintage looking scrapbook paper then tied with twine.
2. Buttons and pins with a few decorative brads thrown in (buttons are secured with straight pins).
~

This is so simple, adorable and, well, chic!

Immediately, I wanted to

run out and buy

the supplies to copy them, then I had to stop myself. My challenge was to use the existing supplies I already had on hand to see what I could come up with (I did have to buy the styrofoam balls.)

How did I do?

I hope you like mine as well as Roeshel's!

I had previously made the moss sphere,
by hot gluing moss to the ball.
One is wrapped with rafia, I wanted to add a black satin ribbon,
but didn't have any on hand. Felt had to stand in, anchored with
a large old button
The last is made up of buttons that had shanks. I put hot glue
around those and pushed into the styrofoam.

The wonderful thing about sharing ideas like this,
is they can be adapted to the style that's in your home.

(The candlesticks are from Tuesday morning,
the elephant is a cement garden figure,
that I found at an antique store.)

  2. Oh Kim - I didn't realize when I wrote the instructions that it looks like there are 2 steps. Just a note for your readers - 1. is for one orb that's just Mod Podge and twine AND 2. is for a completely different button orb.

    :)

  3. These are cool, Kim. I like the things that look vintage but really aren't. B/c I can't afford real vintage anything! I think I might try to make some. I like the way you are taking pictures from a diagonal view. Very "edgy"!

  10. These are fabulous. I love the button ball. I have a lot of buttons that my mom has given me over the years. I'm going to dig those out and make my own.

  12. I guess you could say I have a thing for orbs. My daughters love to tease me and tell me how pointless they are. Won't they be surprised when I use your great ideas and customize an orb for them to start their very own collection!
Fun blog; I'll be back. And thanks for sharing your idea!
