Burlap and a Bottle

Hello friends, how are you this midweek?  Are you up to your elbows in projects, or have a case of spring fever?  I went shopping today with Six-Foot Chick (who's at home for spring break).  We hit the shoe, jewelry, and makeup depts., you can't get more girly than that!

The subtitle of this post should be, "A funny thing happened on the way to get the garlic bread."  Friday I was searching for garlic bread that I could have sworn I purchased.  We have a refrigerator in the garage, so I went to look there.  There were some things that needed to be tossed--of them, was an old glass gallon of wine.  I'm pretty sure there was a light bulb that popped up over my head, cartoon style.

Some time ago, Sherry at No Minimalist Here, covered a bottle in burlap.  I remember thinking, I need to do that if I ever get one of those bottles...

Well, today was the day.  Unfortunately, I don't remember exactly what hers looked like, so we'll pretend this is spot on close.

To cover it, I measured the width around the bottle and divided by four, since I wanted four separate pieces (adding 1/2" per side for a seam allowance).  I didn't take photos along the way, and knew I'd regret it later.  Below is an attempt to explain what was done.  It is supposed to be one strip of fabric.

This is what I did with the strips.  I sewed them all together the 5" length you see on the diagram.  After that, I slid the tube over the bottle inside out and pinned (then sewed) the bottom 2" of the seams so they would fit the bottom of the bottle snugly, then hemmed up 1/2".  Then, slipped the entire tube over the bottle and pinned up two seams (then sewed) of the neck portion.  I only sewed two sides so I could slip the bottle in.  After the bottle was placed in, I hand sewed the two remaining sides.  I pre-hemmed the neck (although it's a little askew) before I hand sewed it.  The bottom of the bottle is not covered.

Of course, I had to whip out my stencil.  It got the same design on both sides and was added after the bottle was in the burlap cover (I just held the stencil and slapped the paint on, thank goodness for stencils!).

I never did find that garlic bread.
