Ten Tips to a Better Blog

Greetings, dear friends.  I've had this post in draft for awhile, because I didn't want anyone to think I was haranguing them.   However, you know and I know, that you've most likely seen all of these (what I'm calling) blunders here.  I'm not even sure the post title is the best--maybe Ten Reasons Why I Don't Read Your Blog, Ten Ways to Receive More Comments???   So, the idea is not to hold myself up as a smarty pants, since I've probably been guilty of most, if not all, of them, (maybe even in this very post!) but ponder over some points you/I may want to consider.  Okay, these are my bug-a-boos.  They are in no particular order.

Ten Tips to a Better Blog

Dos:
  1. Make sure you blog doesn't take too long to load.
  2. Check that photos are large enough to see details.  If a photo of an entire room or table scape is about the size of four postage stamps, it's probably too small.  Go for the gusto--if it's a great shot, give it all you've got (My max. width is 610px, do you know what yours is?).
  3. Evaulate if the font is big enough to be seen clearly.   Consider 14 px or so.  (Check THIS chart.)  Small fonts cause eye strain.  (I know I'm getting up there in age, but for whatever reason, my eyes can see the distance of a computer screen perfectly.) But who wants eye strain?
  4. Make sure the font is not overly light.
  5. Show off a good "After" photo first or early in the post, so I can anxiously await the how-tos.
  6. Foster commenting.  Since Blogger messed with threaded comments, some blogs will not allow comments.  (See instructions below*)
  7. Neaten up those sidebars.  To the best of your ability, center the buttons and gadgets.  You can center a button by placing the coding between <center> and </center>
Don'ts
  1. Bother with an overly cutesy font.  I'm not against "cute," but again, it just makes text more difficult to read.  Please save the creativity for your projects.  The most readable font has little "feet."
  2. Center all of your text, or at least reconsider doing it.  This may work well at times, but if one or two words are consistently left alone on their own line, please think about left justifying.
  3. Use bad grammar.  Okay, I'm no grammarian, and I almost never remember the proper place to use lie vs. lay.  I'm sure I leave participles dangling frequently.  We all make typos.  I'm talking about blatant nails-on-chalkboard bad.  If you know you are not strong on grammar, enlist a buddy to proofread for you.
  4. Make up words.  For instance:  "This is a rufflelump.  Is that even a word?"  Please take a moment to open a new tab and check to see if "rufflelump" is a word.  If you're going to make up a word, own it.

After I made my list up all nice and neat, I added another tip, so there are really eleven, but I liked the sound of "ten" so much better.  Maybe I need to add a twelfth and say "12.  Truth in Post Titles!"  At least it will help to keep me humble.  Maybe.

What would you add?

Edited to add (already!):  The HUGE annoyances of word verification and music.  I originally didn't include them because so much has been said against them already.  Although, apparently not enough!

* To change your comments go  Design -->Settings -->Comments The 3rd option can be switched to Pop-Up window. Good luck!

  1. Great tips, Kim! I have a hard time reading blogs with a very dark background and dark text. Even with my reading glasses on!

I would add get rid of that stupid word verification. There are times I hit a comment to publish only to find it comes back for a word verification. So sometimes, if I'm moving quickly to go to the next blog, I have already closed that one down and you will never see my comment. Blogger is very good at diverting Spam comments, so I don't think it's needed.

  2. Those are all great tips. You know what really bugs me is when people have a music player on their blog that starts playing automatically. I find myself scrolling up and down trying to find it in their side bar so I can turn it off. Who wants to listen to music while they are trying to read? Thanks for the insightful post.

  3. Someone sent me an email recently saying they couldn't comment on my blog due to the threaded comment changes. I've gotten comments on my blog since then. But is the pop up comment window considered better than the embedded option (commenting from the post)?

  4. Hey! Great tips. Currently count me guilty of centering my text. Sometimes I'll left justify but don't always like the look. But you've got me thinking!

  5. I think all your tips are wonderful... I'm guilty of centering as well... seems easier to read..but, what do I know. Hum mm
My dislike is LIGHT colored font. Can't read it and don't take the time to try and make it out. Huts my eyes. Also...clutter...I don't like clutter...too much going on. Put my two cents in...thanks for the "sharing".

  6. Wonderful tips that we can all stand to read and brush up on (sorry, I know not to end on a preposition - ha!)! Thanks for taking the time to help us, Kim! Have a great weekend!

  7. I loved and laughed while reading this post. We think alike! I also don't like the automatic music player on some blogs, pictures taken with a flash that bounce light off anything shiny and leave the "subject" dark/flat and poor grammar.
    Thanks for the tips!

  8. I guilty of centering text too. I'll have to keep an eye on that. Sometimes I think it just looks better when it's coupled with a centered picture. Never realized it make the text difficult to read. I'll have to watch myself.

    Thanks for the pointers.

  9. Great tips. Thanks!
    I HATE word verification!!
Wish Blogger would do away with it!!

  10. I agree with all of your tips. I enjoy quiet while reading blogs, or will have my own music playing so I try to find the the mute or off switch. It is especially annoying if background music is playing when you click on an embedded video and have competing music.

  11. Thank you, Kim, for your tips.
I have to admit I don't always do whole sentences when commenting.
I do try to write 'properly' on my blog though!

  12. Great list -nice to have confirmation. I am sure I am going to get even more ideas from reading the comments. I wholeheartedly agree to banish word verification, and music. I have a darker background, and I am going to change it -but I am ready for an overhaul, and that means I have to choose new pics, colors, etc. Ugh! or Yipee! Depending on your perspective. And, how was that for a run-on sentence? I think that one reason word-verif may be on, is that you can then allow "anonymous" comments without worrying about spam. I tried turning it on because a visitor said her policy was to not comment if anonymous was not allowed. But, I had to change it back because of the spam. Sorry about the book I just wrote! :) Guess I haven't talked to anyone all day!

  13. P.S. Remember if you are a reader/visitor and need the the print larger... just press "Crtl" key plus the "+" key. Each time you hit the "+" key, the print gets larger. (Other method of doing this is to press the Ctrl key and roll the wheel on your mouse, forward. Does the same thing.)

  14. All great tips. I agree with several of the above... dark background, difficult to read, and music, I don't like it. When my daughter was helping with creating my blog she said NO music, people hate it!!

  15. You are too funny! I have been struggling with photo size and font color and size for ages. I have the old minima template and when I tried to change it over to a new blogger template it got all wonky on me and I freaked and went back to the old way...I so need help! I agree with all your points, well said.

  16. Love this post... I'll have to check my own blog. I have word verification but will have to get around to changing that.

  17. I'm going to print your list and double check my blog - thanks for the tips. I wish someone i follow would do a "rate my blog" type of linky party with helpful suggestions. I 'aint scared. I can always take 'em or leave 'em. (:

  18. Interesting and thanks for bringing the word verification thing to our attention. I really dislike that! At least I can turn off the music! :)

  19. Hi, Kim. I appreciate the blogging tips. I am new to blogging and don't have a lot of time for reading them so I love to find the ones that give useful information like you give. I agree on the word verification annoyance. I have done the same as Kathy of Creative Home Expressions, done and gone before I realized nothing happened! I also have just decided to heck with it. I don't like the music either. I know women who read blogs after they go to bed & husband is asleep. That music comes on & wakes them up or the baby! I also,(now I am sounding like a grouch, I usually like everything!) don't like the approval feature. When I first started blogging I commented about 10 times on a blog because it kept disappearing and I kept re-typing it. Then I saw the note about comments will appear after approval. Boy, was I embarrassed. But, I like your blog. I joined on the Linky thing.

  20. Hi Kim,
thanks for the tips. I am also guilty of centering my text...now I know to left justify.
I also used to have my favorite music on my old blog. I liked it but I can see now how annoying it can be. I don't like it on others' blogs.
    What is a linky follower?

    all the best,

    ♥charlotte

  21. I've double checked the list and I don't think I'm guilty of too many of the "don'ts".

One peeve that I could add is when people leave a one or two word comment that has nothing to do with my post or blog. I don't expect a novel, but it's nice to feel that people are reading my posts and not just there looking for a follow back. There are hops/parties that are geared toward that end. (which I fully support)

I appreciate it when you or someone else does a post like this. The way I see it, as long as a critique is honest and isn't mean-spirited, I'm happy to make a change that could make my blog easier or more enjoyable for the good folks who might read it. (I'm not a fan of WV or auto play music either)

    Thanks for the tips, Kim!

  22. This was well-timed for me. I just started blogging and have thought about several of these issues. For example, I tend to left-justify but I like to center my text when it falls between two pictures. I was never sure if that type of inconsistency was annoying.

Also, I like to write the way I speak. This means I start a lot of my sentences with conjunctions. The irony is that I'm a former English teacher. Obviously I know it's incorrect and I never do it in formal writing but I want people to be able to "hear" my voice. (That said, I still flinch whenever I do it and wonder if it's bothering the reader...)

I have no idea whether or not it's difficult to comment on my blog. Were people above indicating that Blogger automatically subjects commenters to WV?

  23. Such a great post. I so appreciate the advice from more senior bloggers. And isn't word verification a pain in booty?!?
