Pattern Tissue Pom Poms and Hutch Goes Red

When I saw projects using old sewing patterns crop up in blogs, I knew those bloggers were on to something.  I have an entire plastic bin of nothing but old sewing patterns.  It was time to fish through them and repurpose, say, patterns from the late 80s, that I wasn't going to make anymore.   What?  Do you still use your 80s patterns?  My pom poms are nothing new, admittedly, but they are used a bit differently.  And...they gave me a great excuse and direction to redo my hutch...

I thought I'd use these natural-colored pattern pom poms in my arrangement.  I really tried to stick to neutral and red.  I plan to use this as a springboard when it's time to add more fall-centered items.  Did you notice my "shredded wheat" pear and apple from last Fall.  I know I have one more of them.   Some.  Where.

Here is the hutch in the immediate "before."  We had it a bit decked out (or is it dec'd) out for Six-Foot Chick's 18th birthday party, partially Knights-themed since she'll be attending UCF.  For the record, Strapping Lad composed the Knights sketch using pencil crayons, 'cause he's crazy talented like that.  He also drew the Pheonix that SFC painted in.  (I don't remember what we had in that big G---A---P.)

The assembly went like this.
  • Cut tissue.  I cut mine between 6-7" wide and 9-12" long.
  • Stack layers.  For most of them, I used six layers.  Not until the last, did I try eight.  I liked eight better.  Figures.
  • Accordian fold, tie center.  I used jute (and some blue ribbon!)
  • Round off ends.  Separate and "fluff"

I adore them in my cloche.  Swoon and sigh.  (How-to Cloche Instructions HERE)  I repainted the knob ORB.

My smallish "pewter" pitcher has been in my closet for, um, probably years.  I bought it w--a--y back at a garage sale.  I think for 25¢.  I like how it picks up the knob on the basket.  Or, does the knob pick up the pitcher???

I loves me some layers...

I really like how using the red and neutrals turned out.

I could look at these silly pom poms all day!  This is my other favorite arrangement, next to the cloche.  I can have two favorites, right?   (Wine Barrel Lazy Susan HERE)

One last full shot.  I may hunt around for something larger to put on the middle shelf.  It looks a bit bare in the very center.

I need to think of other fun things to use my old patterns for, now!

  1. I have two boxes full of 80's patterns that were given to me, because I use the pattern paper to make pulp for handmade paper. I spent many a afternoon and many boxes of tissues as a child making tissue flowers. I will have to give this a try!!!

I love the reds and flowers from old patterns. It's a creative way to use them. I've never seen them used that way before.

Seee you have lots of Longaberger too......I have lots packed away and rarely use them. I used to work with a rep and bought too many!

Love the idea for the old patterns, also scrolled down a saw your t-shirt quilt. WOW! it turned out great. I know exactly what you went though. I made two for my kiddies a few months back. It is not easy making those.
Can't wait to see what you come up with next.
