Welcome to Copy Cat Day! Welcome to Copy Cat Day! Okay, bad joke. Today I'm hosting a LINK PARTY! (I guess I didn't make that clear enough!) The theme is copying. What do I have in store today? This is what I copied--A French wine barrel lid Lazy Susan. I was really tempted to do Napa, but went with classic French, instead.
I'm sure many of you saw Sherry's at No Minimalist Here. As soon as I saw hers, I knew I'd buy the first wooden Lazy-Susan I found. This one was $2 and someone(s) had used it as a cutting board. Why you'd want a rotating cutting board is beyond me! I used my palm sander and thought I had most of the cutting marks out. Then I looked around for inspiration of what I wanted to put on it. This was the inspiration photo I used, after searching for French wine labels--it's an ad for a tile backsplash. Ooo la la!
Fonts were chosen using the closet I could find to Clos Saint-Denis (Colonna MT) and Cotes du Rhone (Cloister Black Light). The words where printed out on Word. Then I did the high-tech method of transferring by rubbing the back of the printout with pencil, then tracing it onto the wood, filling in with craft paint and a paint brush. I need to get a paint pen!
I noted that the American wine lids all read 59 gallons and wondered why they were not 60 gallons. When I decided I wanted to add the "gallon" amount to my "lid," I transferred it to liters. Then, I discovered that 59 gallons = 225 liters. When I double checked the European barrels, they, indeed, read 225 liters. Mystery solved.
After I painted the letters, I began staining it. Don't you know, all of the cutting marks and many more that I did not see began to show up all over the place. Why, why, didn't I think about stain doing that?! Then it was time for
I brought it in the house and began using a combination of brown and black paint--my "go to" colors when I want to simulate wood. I was really not liking the project very much at this point. Now that it's completed, I like it again--It looks nice and rustic. What about you? It's time to strut your stuff. Whom have you been copying and how have your Copy Cat efforts been going?

That looks great, Kim. I think the cut marks just add to the aging.
ReplyDeleteReally like what you did with it. Another original in my book.
ReplyDeleteThat looks GREAT! I think the fact that it has some cut marks on it just adds to the overall appeal of it being OLD! LOVE IT! xo Diana
ReplyDeleteI think it looks great, the more marked up the better!
