Before & After Bargains

BEFORE  I adore butternut.  Not the squash, necessarily, I'm talkin' about the color.  When I saw these dishes before Christmas at GW, I did a double take.  They were in two separate stacks of four-piece settings.

I was contemplating getting just one set, when I found the other in a different spot.  One stack was marked $7, the other wasn't marked.  See how the rims of the plates go perfectly with my butternut and sage plates?  Sorry I didn't get a better shot of the dinner plates.

You can kinda see in the top two photos, the dinner plates have a nice, big jolly snowman on them.  Did I mention I have tomato-colored mugs?

So, the big question:  How much did I pay for everything?  Seven dollars!   There are eight dinner plates, seven saucers and six bowls.   I figured if I used them twice, I'd get my money's worth out of them.  (You know, buying cutesy-Christmas paper plates for two occasions.)  Now for the...

AFTER  I so much enjoyed seeing so many of your homes with vintage Christmas decor, that's what a wanted to look for in after-Christmas clearances.  Here is what I found today.  To the left is old-fashioned-looking peppermint sticks.

A cute wooden cutout, it's taller than it appears (about 10").

A box full of small Santas and mini garland in the background.  Rats, I shoulda pulled the garland out for the photo!

Did you snag any great deals?  Are you changing any of your decor next year?

  1. Cute finds, I like the vintage cut-outs. This year I'll make a few more Christmas ornaments before I pack up the Christmas bits. I won't be thrifting for more Christmas stuff, I'm trying to simplify this year :)

  2. Love your finds. I'm trying to stay away from the holiday clearance aisles because we will be moving this next year. Since I have no idea what kind of house we will have, I don't want to accumulate anything extra. I'm actually having a hard time deciding what I should keep that I already have -- I'm a saver & accumulator!

  5. Wow, that was a great deal, Kim. The pattern does go well with your sage and butter coloured ones. I justify purchases that way too. How many times I will use them vs. cost. Or 'less expensive than two cups of coffee from the coffee shop." I recently bought 24 plain white plates (two caterer's sets) and have used them on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, plus a few other times. They cost $20 total on clearance, and I'm sure I have saved the cost in paper plates already (and they look better too.)

  11. Hi Kim! Thanks for entering one of my giveaways! I love these dishes, but then again I love anything with snowmen. : ) These are great because you can use them with so many different colored plates; I'll bet even red would look good with them. Nice buy! I haven't hit any after holiday sales yet {we kind of got snowed in}, but I'm looking forward to hitting one or two Friday after work.
