Grain Sack Seat

Ta Da!  Do you remember what seems like wa-aa-ay back I won this from Miss Mustard Seed?  I was thinking about making a pillow out of it and using it on this bench right here.
But then, MMS let me know she made it big enough so I could use it on a chair seat...  And I saw some upholstery ideas out in blog world... And...
You can see where this went.  I measured, made a pattern, cut and snipped.  This was very scary!
It found a pillow-soft home on my little, unfinished French caned chair.
(I have all of the materials to make a "real" back for this chair, but it's really just an extra "pretty," so I've just enjoyed the bones of it.)
I wanted it to look more pillow-y, so instead of using the firm green foam that I would usually buy at JoAnn's, I purchased batting for a twin bed.  With my pattern, I cut layers and layers (eight or nine) and stacked them.
So it would have a softer edge, I just used one seam with welting instead of two.  I was so paranoid when I was sewing this, that the first time around, I sewed the welting inside of the cushion!
I still look at it with the cutouts and wonder if I should have made it a pillow...  If you think I've made a total blunder, please don't tell me!
I'm enjoying my little piece of rustic "French" every time I walk by - smiling of course.
I'm linking up to parties this week, I can't wait till Furniture Friday at Miss Mustard Seed's.

Edited to add: I'm joining Donna's grain sack party 1/15/11

  28. I really love this AS IS!
Especially love the little cut-outs around the chair from back...really, how clever.
I have a chair similar to this that I would love to adapt the way you have, because when I reupholstered the seat I unfortunately made it almost impossible to take out w/o destroying the chair.
