To Salvage or Not to Salvage?

...that is the question!  When I was taking pictures for my last post, I really liked the look of this textured fabric on the table.  It's a remnant from a full/queen bed cover that I had previously cut up to make pillow shams.  In my zeal to get more of a good thing, I cut a circle to fit the top of my table and thought short box pleats along the sides would look great.  What I didn't consider is that the fabric has poly in it so I won't get a crisp pleat, it just kind of poofs out.  Oh, how I wish I would have cut a square out and finished the edges!  What do you think?  My choices are 1)  Keep going, it will be just fine, or 2) Stop right now before it looks too grandma-y and put a flat edge all around?  (Obnoxious cord is my computer charger.)
Other stays or goes:  Mirror that came with the small dresser I got for my mom's guest room.  I tried unscrewing the arch on the top, but it's on there pretty good with wood glue or something else.  I think to make a "clean break" it would somehow have to be sawed off.  If I keep it, what should I do with it?
Speaking of clean breaks...  Not so much.  This mirror is shorter and a little wider than a full-length mirror.  Stay or go?  I thought it might work well as a table runner, below.  (Wow, there's too much stuff on there.)
I don't think I'm a mirrored table runner kind of girl.  I've already had to move it to use my table for sewing.  If I wanted to put pillar candles on it to take advantage of the reflection, they'd have to be overly tall to work with the dimensions of the room.  Pouty, pout, pout.
It makes me a little nervous when I have to move it too, 'cause I can hear the glass scratching itself.  Trash or revamp?
Sorry, Kendall, I am adding this late!  I'm linking with Kendall at Finesse Your Nest!

  1. Wow so many questions :)
I think maybe you might like something else better to cover the cute round table with.(Grandma-ish does come to mind)
I love the mirror table runner idea but like you, I am not so sure it is my thing either. You have it decorated beautifully though.
    Have a wonderful day Kim

  2. Definitely keep going on the tablecloth! The mirror - once you get past the 7 years bad luck (lol!) you can probably find some way to salvage it? Maybe hang it up with a bunch of different sized frames in it?!

  3. I love the fabric- go for it! The fabric keeps it from looking too old-fashioned! And the mirror is lovely as a table runner, but too fussy. Repurpose it into something grand!

  4. You asked so here goes--I'm not a fan of the skirt on the table. Or pleats. The arch on the mirror looks like it could be sawed off fairly easily. If not, let it go. I love the look of the mirror on the table. But if you use the table much, it would probably be a royal pain to move it all the time. Have you considered TV trays? ;-)

  5. Can you steam the tablecloth like C-R-A-Z-Y to get it any flatter? I think it is so cute, but is does poof a little much. I would so keep the mirror table runner for the frame. The other mirror, I say dig in and go for it! Saw that arch right off. Or if your in the mood to lighten your load just scrap it. Whatever you do I know it will be wonderful!

  6. I like the Poofy skirt. I think it keeps it from looking too Grandma-ish and adds interest. I would spray pain the arched mirror and repurpose. As for the broken mirror - panes of glass are inexpensive. You knock the broken glass out (carefully) and then have a new mirror installed, or repain the frame and have a new mirror installed. I don't think it works as a table runner.

    That's my two cents!

  7. I would paint the arched mirror white and distress it, although I'm not sure if that is your style.

  8. 1. Not a fan of the table cover either - can't put my finger on why, but it just doesnt hit me right.
    2. Love the mirror, would keep the arch. Great texture in that piece, I would love to paint it antique white and hit it with some RL Smoke. All those glorious nooks and crannies.
    3. I would definitely keep the mirror too, for the unique frame size. I would however put on some heavy duty gloves and pull all the mirror out. Just too dangerous for me with shards and stuff. After pulling the mirror, I might back it with something, or even put on a console table with no "bottom" and use it to frame a few things. Awesome!

  10. Tablecover -- eh not so much a fan.
Mirror with arch -- paint that thing white or black and KEEP KEEP KEEP!
Broken mirror -- throw the mirror part out and keep that frame. Display it as is somewhere or painted!

  11. Oh Kim I don't sew at all so I'm not too sure on that idea. Hmmm...

I do love the mirror as the table runner. It looks gorgeous and your decorated it so beautifully. Love it! *Smiles*

  12. Would it work to run a small stich 1/4 way down the pleat to make stay in place and then poof? (Not sure if I would fit the circle of the table)

  13. I really like the poufy table skirt, my vote is to keep going with that! I like a couple of the other ladies ideas to paint the arched mirror white and antique it, I think that would look great. And for the other mirror, how about taking the glass out and re-purposing it to something else... like a bulletin board!

  14. The tablecloth is cute! Crisp pleats would be better, but I still like it. Maybe you could sew the pleats to make them "crisp". Paint the big mirror, but don't throw it out!!!! Keep that frame of the broken mirror. So many fun things you could do with that~~~

  15. I love the table cover...do continue! It hits me as cottagy...in which I love. I am not a fan of using the mirror as a table runner...although, it did look good....just too much. Keep in mind....those thoughts came from someone that does not care for a decorator feel...a more simple cottage feel.

  16. Okay, I'm not loving the fabric on the table. Like some others, can't put my finger on exactly why but it's just not "speaking to me".

The arched mirror - I LOVE the arched part. I wouldn't saw it off. Just sand and paint that puppy. I'm thinking white or black, but you could also do a fashion color and it would look great!

The other mirror - Do you have a console table that it could fit on to make a mirrored tabletop? I like the idea of laying it flat a lot but if you keep having to move it to sew, then it's not going to work.

Thanks for linking up to Shop The House Sunday!

  17. Hi! I just came over from Finesse your nest and am so glad I did. You have a lovely blog and I've become a new follower.
I like the pleated tablecloth. It’s going to be beautiful when you finish with it. I’m not too sure about the mirrors, though. The broken one seems dangerous. Might be best to salvage the frame and get rid of the mirror.

  18. Flat edge for the table cover (LOVE that you are using up remnants and scraps for that!)

I'm getting an art deco vibe from that mirror. I like it. But maybe better if it were painted and hung above a small table?

The last mirror - I say get rid of the mirror and keep the frame for another project.

  19. Have you thought about having the table cover pressed at cleaner? I love the mirror on the table but I use my kitchen eatting area more than the dinning room.
Can you teach me how to do a tablescape? I just love how you use accessories.

  20. Hi there, I just stumbled on your blog tonight and I thought I'd post a comment about your broken mirror dilema.

What about taking the glass out, painting the frame and then putting a piece of wood back in that's been painted with chalkboard paint?? Just an idea :)
