Would You Pay $1 For This Duck?

This adorable lodge-style plaque is about 14" in diameter.   Complete with a cute little handcrafted and painted mallard duck.  The entire piece appears to be handmade, actually.  How much would you pay for it?  Would you buy it?  Where or how would you use it in your home?  Would you paint it, mod podge it, add it to a themed room, toss it in the garage sale pile???  I guess this can be our Duck Challenge.  Give it your best shot, girls, and have fun!

You know what?  I just had a thought.  What's a challenge without a prize?  Whoever has the best idea for using this duck plaque and turning it into something lovely and original for the home, will get their blog button displayed at the top right of my blog for the remainder of July.  The thousands--okay, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration--of people who see it will want to head over to your blog.  The winner will be announced on Saturday, July 10th.

  1. I would pay $1 for the duck! If the duck can come off, I might use the circle as the base for a cool initial going back in it's place. If the duck doesn't come off, I think I would sand and distress the entire thing in Heirloom white. Then I would find some sort of nautical scrapbook paper in a navy or red and mod podge our friend ducky. Distress the edges and then it is an uber cool duck for a nursery or kids bath. Use a piece of jute or rope to make a hanger and hang from an antique knob. I can see this as an under $10 project with tons of impact. xoxo

  2. For $1 I would buy it and use it in a nursery or child's bathroom. I'd prime and paint it using bright, cheerful colors.

  3. Maybe it is because I have been working on so many nurseries lately, but I am thinking in a babies room. I don't think I would paint it!

  4. I would totally pay $1 for it! My husband's nickname is Pato. It's what we all call him. It means duck in Spanish. I buy all kinds of Duck stuff because of it. I would paint the duck yellow with an orange bill (like a rubber duck), paint the bottom blue, the top white, and hang it over his side of the bed. :) Stopping by from SITS!

  5. Lol! My husband made a duck like this a few years ago and I've been trying to get rid of it for a few years! He keeps digging it out of the garbage or gives me a long sob story on how he made it and everything.

So would I pay $1 for it? Probably not but I would give mine away for free - lol! =)

  6. I like Green Gracie's ideas! I would pay $1 if only to use it for a template... It looks like you can turn it around and hang it on the wall, the 2 horizontal strips keeping it off of the wall a bit. If so, I would paint or stain the "back" side and hang a smaller complimentary picture on it. (Using it as a background for the picture.)

  7. I would pay $1 for this piece, put the picture of it on my blog with a saying below it, "Only Kim would actually buy this!" Now what on earth is she going to do with it? haha

  8. My sister, who is on the high strung, workaholic side :), has a number of ducks around her home. If I were to pay $1 for this duck, I'd give it to her. Before I wrapped it up, however, I'd paint the background a cream color and distress it. Afterwards, I'd embellish it with the following quote Michael Caine quote using the green of the duck's head, which is also featured prominent in my sister's kitchen. (She's kind of stuck in the 90s when it comes to her home decor. :) "Be like a duck. Calm on the surface, but always paddling like the dickens underneath."

  9. Don't think I would buy it, but I have an idea what I would do with it. I would paint the whole thing white, paint the duck in very pale shades, then sand and distress the whole thing. Or, pry the duck off and make a sign out of it. Wondering what you will do with it.

  10. I didn't read the other comments cuz that would be cheating so I hope I am the first to suggest a Lazy Susan. I would take the duck off and save it for another project. I would attach the old round spice organizer I have in my project closet to the side where the duck was attached using Gorilla Glue. The I would paint it an apple green and antique it with a brown glaze.
It would reside on my kitchen table with a vase and a single white flower and my antique salt and pepper shakers. Additional condiments could be placed on the lazy susan as needed.

The Duck Challenge was fun and I now have to go read all the other ideas.

  11. I'd buy it.

Here's what I'd do with it:
    Take the duck off.

Take a 2" x 4", and cut two pieces at about 20" long.

Turn the little plaque where the side with the two wood bars on it is on the bottom.

Place the two pieces of wood symmetrically underneath it, put a little wood glue on them, and then nail them in from the top.

Sand it all down and paint it red, then distress it.

Put a few coats of poly on the top.

Then I'd use it as a small drink table for my sofa. (Actually I have one.) Keep it right in front of the sofa, and use it for drinks and remotes. That way you don't have to reach all the way over to the coffee table.

  13. Would I pay $1.00 for it....heck NO!!! But I will sell it for $1.00 and give the buyer Jeanine's Husband Duck as a Thank You gift for getting it out of my house!!! LOL!!!

  14. For $1, I would remove the duck, add a wooden fish, paint and distress it, paint "Brockmeyer's Cabin", add hooks at the bottom for keys where the dowel pins should be and hang it in our camper cabin!! Whew...now I am tired and need a break!!

  15. uff da! I would not buy it. But.... if some one gave it to me I might, take that duck off and throw it in the fire pit. Then paint it white with some antiquing, add a small piece of wood to the bottom ledge so it would be a miniature shelf. Perhaps place some faux training flowers to hang off the edge.

  16. I have not a clue what to do with it. I'd have to wait until I saw what someone else did with it & then if I liked it, copy it. And no, I would have passed it up. Hubby might like to use it for target practice though.

  19. I don't know what you would do with that duck, but for $1, it's worth figuring out! He could be cute painted yello with the background painted blue and little wave lines. Linda

  20. Hmmm... this is an interesting challenge. I would buy it - paint the wood backer like a porthole and the duck the classic yellow rubber ducky kind of yellow. I would then give it my hubby's best friend and wife since they have a rubber ducky themed bathroom!

  21. You got me...I have no idea what to do with the duck! I will have to think about it. I really like your book page wreaths...so pretty and fun.

  22. Oh yeah I'd buy it. It would then go through a massive molting where the feathers would come back as a soft cream with glaze. Perhaps it would then be attached to a small basket with the word "bills" on it.
Hehe bills, duck bills, ok, ok, I just woke up.

  23. I might buy it for 1.50 even...then he of course would get a face lift! Thanks for stopping over. Have a great weekend. Debbie

  24. My hubby's idea: Turn it into a serving platter and use it to serve "quackers." Hahahahaha...I'm still laughing!

  25. I would put it on the front of a cedar toy chest in a hunting/camping themed boys room. Or even hang it from the door in that made up room and add say......Ethan's Room....on the top and bottom where the spaces are. As for paying $1.....why not.....just another craft on my list!!! :o)
I hope you find an idea you can use!

  26. Ewww...one more idea....you could glue on some shells/bullets to the spots that are missing in the middle and add some personalization to it and hang it in a husband's office~who is a hunter of course!

  27. i don't have a blog button yet...hmmm...maybe i need to make one?

okay, i didn't read the comments above so hopefully i'm not repeating anyone. the first thing i thought of when i saw this are the outdoor duck figurines that people round these parts sometimes decorate with clothing for various holidays. SO, imagine with me:

    - for a little girl's room...
    - paint the wood behind the duck hot pink
    - paint the duck white and enhance her eyes with some pretty lashes
    - make a few articles of "clothing" using scraps of fabric and attach to the duck with velcro. nothing extravagant - you could even just trace shapes that fit the silhouette of the duck's body and not even sew anything if you don't want to.
    - the idea is that she can play "fashion plate duckie" whenever she wants.

kinda kookie, but i think it's fun! :)
